Former D.A.R.E Officer sentenced for child pornography charges

DAYTON, Ohio (WKEF) -- A former D.A.R.E officer was sentenced to over 15 years in prison for child pornography crimes.

Department of Justice officials say 60-year-old Kevin A. Kovacs was will spend 181 months in prison for committing two federal child pornography crimes.

Kovac's was arrested in April of 2020 and pleaded guilty in February of 2022 to transporting and possessing child pornography.

According to court documents, between April of 2015 and July of 2017, Kovacs uploaded over 2,500 images and videos depicting child pornography to his Dropbox account. Those videos featured the sexual abuse of children as young as toddler-aged. Court documents also show that one video depicted a toddler lying on a diaper whose arms and legs were bound by black tape.

Kovacs used online messenger, social media, cloud storage and email accounts to transport and possess child pornography.

He was employed as a police officer with the Beavercreek Police Department from 1992 until his retirement in 2018. He spent his last six years of his police career as the D.A.R.E., officer with Beavercreek City Schools.

Following the completion of his sentence, Kovacs will be under supervised release for 15 years and is ordered to pay $46,000 in restitution to victims.
